The Queen Sonja International Music Competition

The Queen Sonja International Music Competition, which takes place in Oslo 13 - 23 August 2013, is a renowned and prestigious competition for singers from all over the world.

Over 200 singers from 45 countries applied for this year’s competition, and after a thorough assessment by a national screening jury 42 singers from 24 countries have been selected to participate in the Competition. The singers start out with preliminary rounds at the Norwegian Academy of Music. 12 singers proceed to the semi final at the Norwegian National Opera & Ballet, and out of these, 5 participants go through to the live-televised final concert on the Main Stage in Oslo’s stunning Opera House.  The Competition also includes an extensive concert programme, masterclasses and social events.

Several leading British cultural institutions are involved in this year’s competition. The Competition has established a close collaboration with the Jette Parker Young Artists Programme at the Royal Opera House Covent Garden, and the academy has nominated some of its best singers to compete in the preliminary rounds in Oslo. Dame Felicity Palmer, renowned British mezzo-soprano and music professor, is a member of the jury, and Kasper Holten, Director of the Royal Opera House, will hold a masterclass in stage craft and give a talk about directing opera today.
