From 12 April to 15 June 2012 the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) will be exhibiting the work of Reiulf Ramstand and Jensen & Skodvin Architects, two of Norway’s most high-profile and innovative practices. Landscape and Intervention explores their work over the last 10 years, notably their buildings for the National Tourist Routes initiative in Norway.

The National Tourist Routes scheme is a successful long-term architectural initiative that has transformed parts of rural Norway into national tourist attractions. Previously isolated areas have become destinations in themselves through the commissioning of a variety of built projects. About 50 have been undertaken, many of them by younger architects, and they include river saunas, viewing platforms and bridges, lay-bys, steps and paths down to water or up a mountain slope, cafés, hotels and exhibition and information centres. Reiulf Ramstad and Jensen & Skodvin have created some of the most striking of these, set within a magnificent natural environment of mountains, fjords, waterfalls, pine forests, cliffs and gorges.

While the National Tourist Routes projects across Norway feature prominently, the exhibition also includes other work by both practices, such as private housing and public buildings, all adding to an understanding and appreciation of contemporary Norwegian architecture. The exhibition will include photographs, models, drawings and films.

Reiulf Ramstad formed the practice in 1995. It has since received many awards, and twice been nominated for the Mies van der Rohe Award - in 2011 for the Trollstigen National Tourist Route project and in 2007 for Østfold University College.

Jan Olav Jensen and Børre Skodvin also set up their practice in 1995. They have completed a wide range of projects for public as well as private clients, mostly building commissions and landscape interventions, but also furniture and urban planning. Their many awards include the Norwegian State Award for Architecture for the National Tourist Routes.
