Finding work in Norway

Information about job vacancies in Norway is available from NAV, the Norwegian Labour & Welfare organisation'swebsite or telephone 0047 800 33 166 (freephone within Norway).

For more information, see the brochure ‘A Guide to Living and Working in Norway’, available online from NAV or from the Embassy. Jobseekers should be aware that spoken Norwegian is usually a requirement for finding work.

You can also contact job centres in the UK and ask their Euroadviser about the EURES (European Employment Services) vacancy database. This is a register of jobs in countries within the EEA (European Economic Area). A list of regional EURES offices in Norway is available on the NAV website or from the Embassy. The EURES website allows employers and job-seekers to be matched up on line.

Information about the EEA agreement is available from the website of the Directorate of Immigration at UDI's web pages. Citizens of EU/EEA countries do not need a work permit in Norway. However, they must apply for a residence permit within three months of arrival.

Information for jobseekers, including medical or health personnel, can be found on the NAV website.

Teachers wishing to work at an international school in Norway can contact the British Council OEA Division, tel. 020 7930 8466. They will also find a list of such schools under the Education & Research section on the Embassy's website - click here.

Most newspapers also carry a ‘Situations Vacant’ column. Try Aftenposten, the main Oslo daily, which also has national distribution, or a local paper in Norway. Other useful websites are www.jobbguiden.no and www.finn.no

To make enquiries with employment agencies or with potential employers direct, you can search the Norwegian yellow pages in Norwegian and English on www.gulesider.no .

Atlantis Youth Exchange is a non-profit organisation running a programme called Working Guest which is good for summer jobs, see www.atlantis-u.no .
