Welcome to the Royal Norwegian Embassy's newsletter for November!
Whilst temperatures are sinking outside, there are several Norwegian events in November that will push the mercury up to boiling point. Don't miss the strong line-up at the London Jazz Festival which this year includes Jan Garbarek - tickets to all shows are selling out fast so be quick to get yours! Ibsen's twisted heroine Hedda Gabler makes a welcome return to London, whilst a grand finale of the Grieg year takes place in Wigmore Hall, and critically acclaimed Sami duo Adjágas are back for their first UK tour. There is also a unique opportunity to hear Norwegian Foreign Minister give a lecture at LSE this Friday. And finally, for those who already are planning ahead to next month, the Norwegian Christmas tree in Trafalgar Square will be lit on 6 December and followed by an exciting concert the next day in St-Martin-in-the-Fields; for more info, visit www.norway.org.uk/norwayuk/.  Norway's Foreign Minister, Jonas Gahr Støre, will give a lecture on the strategic challenges in the High North of Europe at the London School of Economics. A region frozen during the Cold War is re-emerging in European and international politics.  Ibsen's twisted heroine has fascinated theatregoers for generations and is considered one of the truly great roles for an actress. Following successful productions of ‘A Doll’s House’ (2005) and an earlier staging of ‘Hedda Gabler’ in 2001, internationally acclaimed Galleon Theatre Company are bringing the latter play to Greenwich, London.  A concert at London's Wigmore Hall culminates the Grieg Society's commemorations of the centenary of Grieg's death. It features the Society's patron, cellist Raphael Wallfisch, and three other internationally acclaimed artists, with a programme comprising songs and chamber music, including the rarely performed Andante for Piano Trio.  Norwegian Sami duo Adjágas, renowned for their charismatic ‘yoiking’, return to the UK again for their first extensive tour following the release of their much acclaimed album. Adjágas is the Sami word for the mental state between waking and sleeping, and it's undoubtedly their Sami roots that define the duo as being so different. [+] Read more

 Norwegian artist Eline McGeorge returns to Hollybush Gardens, London, for a new solo exhibition in which carrying forward the spatial and conceptual focus of her practise. The exhibition will also add further elements introduced in her latest solo show at Fotogalleriet in Oslo in May 2007. [+] Read more

 London-based Norwegian choreographer Maria Korsnes’ performance ‘Human Eco’ will be shown at two locations in London in connection with its participation at Spanish dance competition Masdanze. ‘Human Echo’ takes inspiration from Korsnes’ native country through landscape and photography.  Hanne Bramness, one of the leading poets of her generation in Norway, has her latest collection of poems, 'Salt on the eye', published in the UK. Bremness will be reading from her book on Tuesday 20 November at Shearsman Books in Swedenborg Hall, Bloomsbury, London. [+] Read more

 One of Britain’s most popular printmakers, Graham Clarke, has given a sparkling boost to the Norwegian city of Stavanger, the European Capital of Culture 2008, with a book about it.  The annual Christmas fair at the Norwegian church and seamen's mission, St. Olav's Church, in London, will take place on 16 and 17 November. A wide selection of Norwegian products and items will be on sale, including silver, pewter and bronze jewellery, Norwegian sweaters and knitting wool, books, CDs and DVDs, and Norwegian groceries and hand-made cakes.  Great Yarmouth will once again be incorporating a strong Norwegian theme at its annual Christmas fair that opens for three days on Friday 30 November. The Norwegian choir Lardal Kantori will also be performing Christmas carols at St. Nicholas Chruch on 1 December in connection with the fair. [+] Read more
