Ibsen's twisted heroine has fascinated theatregoers for generations and is considered one of the truly great roles for an actress. A new version of ‘Hedda Gabler', by a theatre company set up to provide opportunities for emerging theatre professionals, now comes to London.
23/08/2006 :: "I still have one thing left to amuse myself with."
"What's that, Hedda?"
"My pistols, George darling."
The plot evolves around a dangerously bored Hedda who returns from her honeymoon to find no outlet for her passion for life, in a house she no longer wants and with a husband she can barely stand. Her only diversions are her father's pistols and her deadly talent for manipulating the lives of her friends and acquaintances.
Wildfire Theatre Company presents a gripping new production of this explosive classic, to mark the 2006 centenary of Ibsen's death. The play explores the inner turmoil of a passionate young woman trapped in a conventional and loveless marriage and dangerous power games. A potent mix of dark humour and tragedy, this play is as relevant today as it was a hundred years ago.
Wildfire Theatre Company has been set up to provide opportunities for emerging theatre professionals to develop and showcase their work, and to provide London audiences with high-quality yet affordable fringe theatre. This production will be directed by Elizabeth Park, artistic director of Debut Theatre Company, whose previous work has been Critic’s Choice in The Guardian, The Scotsman, The Sunday Times and The Irish Post. She is also a member of the Young Vic Genesis Directors’ programme.
