Designers Norway Says and manufacturer L.K. Hjelle were awarded the Wallpaper* Design Award on 2 December in the category Best Furniture for the sofa UGO. The collaboration between Norway Says and L.K. Hjelle continues to be a unique success story
06/12/2004 :: This is the first time the Wallpaper* Design Awards were given. But it is not the first time the cooperation between Norway Says and manufacturer L.K. Hjelle is recognised. A year ago UGO received the Award for Design Excellence from the Norwegian Design Council. The unique and versatile sofa-system was recognized for its geometrical shapes, its special functions and the aesthetics that give it a strong and distinctive expression.
The cooperation between Norway Says, consisting of the three designers Torbjørn Anderssen, Andreas Engesvik and Espen Voll, and L.K. Hjelle, a furniture manufacturer rich on tradition and eagerness to renew its profile, has received much attention and appraisal. Just look at this:
In February the sofa BREAK was awarded the +1 Award at the Stockholm Furniture Fair as the fair’s most interesting new product. Just a week ago BREAK was honoured with an Award for Design Excellence by the Norwegian Design Council, plus a nomination for the Honours Award for Design Excellence.
The fact that they didn’t receive the most prestigious, Norwegian design-price this year came as no surprise. That is because UGO’s sister sofa HAL won the Honours Award for Design Excellence last year. And as if that price was not enough, earlier this autumn Norway Says received the Bruno Mathsson Award 2004 in commemoration of the Scandinavian Design-pioneer. And in September UGO was short listed for the Blueprint Award at 100% Design in London.
Wallpaper magazine sells 107.800 copies and is published in 52 countries. Wallpaper is considered to be the most updated and comprehensive magazine for architecture, design, fashion and trends in the world. Wallpaper has earlier awarded prices in different categories, but as from this year they have decided to broaden their perspective.
Judges for the Wallpaper* Design Awards include US architect Richard Meier; São Paulo's design superstars, the Campana Brothers; Mexico and now Hollywood's hottest and brightest young actor, Gael Garcia Bernal; home-grown graphics legend Peter Saville; Fashion's queen of clean, Jil Sander; and Beirut/Paris-based architect and designer Annabel Karim Kassar. All the winners will be showcased in the Wallpaper January/February issue on sale from the 2.nd of December.
