Architecture is making its presence felt in cutting-edge fashion. Star fashion designer and artist, Pia Myrvold, exhibits her Paris Identity collaborations with Jean Nouvel at The Fashion of Architecture at Deluxe Gallery, 12 - 21 February.
18/02/2004 :: Pia Myrvold's work is being paired with a large-scale rendering of Zaha Hadid's plan for the Museum of Contemporary Art now under construction in Rome. Pia Myrvold regards fashion¹s impact on the built environment as a fundamental aspect of urban culture. Myrvold collaborated with Jean Nouvel to develop her Paris Identity series, incorporating his drawings, blueprints and plans into the motifs she designed for the series. The motifs on the garments exhibited here depict urban and architectural details from the Paris cityscape.
Myrvold had previously collaborated with Bernard Tschumi in 1992, who commissioned her to create an installation at Parc de la Villette in Paris. Myrvold stretched scaffolding and textile panels for five hundred meters along the canal in an interactive structure that mimicked a garment¹s role in containing and surrounding space. ŒAs fashion plays a greater role in determining the types of structures forming the urban environment, it also reveals that a new economy of space is evolving, Myrvold explained.
With exhibition design and graphic expressions produced by Bleed, The Fashion of Architecture promises to be a landmark presentation of this fascinating genre.
The exhibition is curated by author and journalist Bradley Quinn.
