Successful Winter Festival

The Winter Festival in Orkney was a great success with a large number of people taking part and enjoying themselves.

As Norway annually gives two Christmas Trees to Orkney, there were a great number of Norwegians attending the Festival. Grimstad City Council, which gives a tree to the St. Magnus Cathedral in Kirkwall, was represented by the Convener of Grimstad, Mr Svein Harberg. The Tree from Hordaland is a gift to the Orkney Island District Council and is placed outside the St. Magnus Cathedral. Converner of Hordaland, Mrs Torill Selsvik Nyborg and Director of Culture, Mrs Ingebjørg Astrup both visited Orkney during the festival.

Hordaland County Council had also invited the Skala Band, Harding Fiddler Benedicte Maurseth and Soprano Berit Opheim who performed at various venues during the festivities.

Present at the festival was also Norwegian Consul Grethe Knudsen and Norway's Honorary Consul in Orkney, Mr Bill Spence.
