Romance and Football at Edinburgh International Film Festival

Norwegian films 'Just Bea' and 'United' prove romance is still alive.

30/08/2004 :: UK Premiere
Just Bea (Bare Bea)
Directed by Petter Naess

At 16, Bea is the last one of her clique who hasn't 'done it'. Hopelessly besotted with Daniel, the school's best-looking and most popular guy, she's amazed to find that the attraction is mutual. Suddenly a whole new world of social and sexual possibilities open up but, as her friends gently remind her, there's just one problem: when someone is about to lose their virginity, they should never do it with someone they love. Enter Anders, a 19-year-old would-be gardener, who complicates matters for Bea in every way. Funny and affectionate, Naess's comedy of sexual manners is a delight for viewers of all ages.

Cast: Kaia Foss, Kim S Falck-Jørgensen, Kamilla Grønli Hartvig, Ida Thurman-Moe, Maria Gullaksen Brinch, Espen Klouman-Høiner, Geir Atle Johnsen, Janne Kokkin, Ingrid B Buaas

Scottish Premiere
United
Directed by Magnus Martens

Living in a small coastal town, Kaare dreams of being signed to Manchester Utd; in the meantime, though, he works at the local shipyard and coaches, in his spare time, the local boys' team. But his girlfriend Anna is bored with his dreams, so when his old school rival Stian turns up, now rich and successful, she starts eyeing him, appreciatively. To win her back, Kaare must apply for a place in a local team, a ramshackle bunch of mavericks coached by an eccentric Russian. Superbly-performed and quietly hilarious, United is a treat, beautifully shot at various locations on Norway's stunning West Coast.

Cast: Håvard Lilleheie, Berte Rommetveit, Vegar Hoel, Ole-Jørgen Nilssen, Gjert Haga, Sondre Sørheim
