Supporting documents

When you have submitted the application and paid the fee on the Visa Portal, you must submit a number of supporting documents. Please note the the Consulate General cannot start processing the application before all these documents have been received.

  1. Your passport or travel document
    Make sure that your passport is valid for at least 3 months beyond your intended stay in Norway and that the passport has a blank page for a visa sticker. If you intend to return to the UK after your stay in Norway, you must make sure that your visa / permit for the UK is valid for at least 3 months beyond your stay in Norway.

  2. One recent colour passport size photograph
    The photos must be less than 6 months old, have a light background and be of good quality (must be taken in a photo booth or by a professional photographer). For more information, please click here (please do NOT use paperclips or staples to attach the photos to the application form).

  3. Evidence of occupation / student status
    Proof of your current occupation in the UK, e.g. an original letter from your employer. Please make sure that the letter is on headed paper, contains a contact name and number and is duly signed. If your employer will be financially responsible for you during your stay(s) in Norway / Schengen states and / or has health insurance for you (must be valid in all Schengen states and have a minimum cover of EUR 30,000), the employer should confirm this in this letter.

    If you are a student in the UK: An original letter from your college or university confirming your status / attendance.
    If you are self-employed: A letter from your solicitor, accountant, the Inland Revenue, etc.
    If you are unemployed: Your social benefit booklet.

    Any letter / document must be less than 3 months old. E-mails and scanned documents are not accepted.

  4. Invitation / Evidence of accommodation

    For business trips: Original letter of invitation (less than 3 months old) from your foreign business partner explaining the nature and duration of stay applied for and whether it involves single, double or multiple entries (and evidence of accommodation, e.g. confirmed hotel reservation). Please make sure the letter is printed on headed paper, contains a contact name and number and is duly signed. If the application is urgent, the letter may also be faxed directly (from the office in Norway) to the Consulate General (fax number: +44 131 220 4976). However, you may also be requested to submit the original letter before the visa is granted.

    Any letter / document must be less than 3 months old. E-mails and scanned documents are not accepted.

    For a visit to your family / friends: Signed, original letter of invitation (evidence of accommodation) (less than 3 months old), accompanied by a copy of your friend / family member's passport and residence permit (if applicable) or a GUARANTEE FORM signed by the sponsor in Norway. The sponsor must bring the Guarantee Form to the local Police station in Norway and produce a valid ID (national passport or Norwegian driving licence) along with proof of funds (bank statements / self assessment form /pay slips). If you do not submit a Guarantee form, you must also provide evidence that you have sufficient funds to support yourself during your stay, e.g. original recent bank statements (minimum 3 months), traveller's cheques, credit cards with credit limit statement. Please note that cash is not accepted.

    The invitation and guarantee form must be less than 3 months old. E-mails are not accepted.

    For tourism: If you are not visiting anyone in Norway / Schengen, you should submit a travel plan outlining where you intend to go (which countries, cities, etc, how you intend to travel) and where you intend to stay. If the application is granted (the Consulate General will contact you), you will be asked to provide proof of booked accommodation for the entire stay. However, the Consulate General recommends that you do not pay for any bookings before you know that the visa application has been granted. You also need to submit evidence that you have sufficient funds to support yourself during your stay, e.g. original recent bank statements (minimum 3 months), traveller's cheques, credit cards with credit limit statement. Please note that cash is not accepted.


Additional documents for certain applicants:


Applicants under 18 years of age:
Original (or Certified True Copy made by competent authority), birth certificate (stating both parents' names) and both parents' passports.

A letter signed by both parents giving consent to the child obtaining a Schengen Visa.

If one of the parents has sole custody of the child, original (or certified true copy) proof of this must be submitted.


Holders of British (brown) travel document (Certificate of Identity)  
Visa applicants holding British Certificate of Identity must - upon lodging an application - be able to produce the latest letter received from British Home Office confirming his / her status in the United Kingdom. The "Home Office letter" is an additional requirement to the normal requirements stated earlier on in this page.

Please note that in some cases further documents and guarantees may be required (for any applicant).
