Edinburgh-based artist Magnus Bjerk exhibits his most recent work 'In Between', a series of photographs which "challenge gravity, the limits of their surroundings and the strict, graphic compositions of the photographs"
The people occupying the landscapes in the ‘In Between’ series challenge gravity, the limits of their surroundings and the strict, graphic compositions of the photographs.
‘In Between’ strives for a lightness, away from obstacles and the burdens of gravity. The series thus explores the tension between the human and the static.
“‘In Between’ 1, 2, 3 & 4 consists of staged models in nature, architecture and optically manipulated settings. I am interested in the tension between the human and the surroundings and the relationship between movement and the static.
"The persons in my series can be seen as challengers of their environs, of gravity of the strict graphic compositions and of their constant surroundings. ‘In Between’ contains a longing for a state of 'lightness', away from obstacles and the forces of gravity. Or put in other words: a longing to fly.
"I have thus experimented with landscapes as mirrors of mental states that are dominated of one single strong colour, more or less long exposures and to some extent optical manipulation.
"In Between 1, which is printed digitally from a negative, is not manipulated more than what is possible in a traditional darkroom (highlighting and darkening selected areas of the image).”
The exhibition is in memory of Jon Andreas Bjerk and Johnny Aleksander 'Spencer' Torp.
