Bergman's latest (and last) feature film; a magisterial summation of his extraordinary career and concerns.
Effectively a sequel to his classic 1973 work 'Scenes From a Marriage' - following that film's two main characters, Marianne and Johan, three decades after their divorce - this reunites the director with actors Liv Ullmann and Erland Josephson. Divided into ten chapters, complete with a prologue and an epilogue, it's a tough but ultimately compassionate study of lost love and intergenerational tensions, magnificently performed by its two leads and scripted by Bergman, who at age 85 has lost none of his genius for emotional honesty. Anguished and profoundly moving, it's the final masterpiece from one of the greatest filmmakers of all time
