Jon Fosse’s ‘Suzannah’ on in Lewes, East Sussex

 Date:26/05/2008 - 30/05/2008

Sussex-based Synergy Theatre is showing ‘Suzannah’ by Norwegian playwright Jon Fosse in May, following in the wake of the highly successful production of Henrik Ibsen’s ‘The Masterbuilder’.

The playwright Jon Fosse, who is achieving increasingly wide renown as Norway’s successor to Ibsen, has carefully researched the most central feminine figure in Ibsen’s life – Suzannah Thoresen.  As the dramatist’s wife, she exerted an incalculable influence on the direction and content of his later plays.

It is thanks almost exclusively to her that the man who George Bernard Shaw dubbed ‘The Father of Modern Drama’ became identified with championing the cause of women’s emancipation. Without her there would not have been a Nora or a Hedda or any of the other Ibsen women who challenged the supremacy of men and the demeaning nature of their own positions in society.

‘Suzannah’ gives us a delightful and thought-provoking insight into what made Mrs Ibsen tick. We see her at three stages of her life – young girl, respected mother, wistful widow - and come away with a far better understanding of how and why her husband wrote what he did.

Jon Fosse (1959-) is one of Norway’s most popular contemporary dramatist both nationally and internationally. His plays are minimalist and tightly structured, with a repetitive style somewhere between realism and the absurd. His language is poetic and clearly influenced by rock music. His plays tend to explore the relations – or the absence of such – between people. Fosse also writes novels, poetry, essays and children’s books. His works have been translated into more than 20 languages.

The play ‘Bed Among the Lentils’ by Alan Bennett will also be showing at the same theatre on the same dates. Performances of this unique double-bill are at the beautiful Pelham House in Lewes.
