Sound Transmitter, the first in a series of Nordic double bills featuring the most exciting musicians from the outer reaches of jazz and new music, will include Norwegian jazz duo Susanna and The Magical Orchestra, and Tys Tys from the Danish eclectic underground scene.
Susanna and The Magical Orchestra’s debut album was one of the most celebrated of 2004, with the release of Melody Mountain this autumn, their ascendancy continues. The Norwegian duo’s slow moving, delicately woven web of voice and sparse electronics, entwines listeners in a world of exquisite beauty and pain. Susanna’s subtle vocal inflections and savoured consonants are suspended by the otherworldly glitches and organ sounds of the Magical Orchestra, AKA Morten Qvenild. The duo’s latest album ‘Melody Mountain’ is out now.
Fast emerging from Copenhagen’s eclectic underground scene where jazz, rock and electronic musicians mix freely, Tys Tys have found a powerful and distinctive sound through which to channel the lyrics of their surreal yet tender songs. Improbable influences of late Beatles, jazz and even psalms appear fleetingly then vanish. Carried by Maria Laurette Friis’ fragile yet commanding voice and a tight-knit band, their original material transfers into captivating live performances.
