Norwegian accordionist at Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival

 Location:England, Huddersfield

Accordionist Frode Haltli visits the Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival with his show 'Passing Images' where he offers a new reckoning with some of the music that first inspired him.

With 'Passing Images', Haltli presents a decidedly untraditional view of the Norwegian folk tradition with, for instance, a psalm from the western fjords, a lyrical waltz from Haltli’s home village near the Swedish border, a Roma traveller tune that mysteriously evokes Albert Ayler’s sound-world, and much more.

Haltli has pioneered new sounds for his instrument both through partnerships with leading composers and through his work as an improviser. His work covers contemporary classical, jazz and folk idioms, and his debut album Looking into Darkness (ECM) received rave reviews, winning the Norwegian record industry’s award for ‘best contemporary music album’. His programme at Wapping contrasts the intimate, eccentric and theatrical qualities in works by Helmut Oehring and Claudia Molitor with Magnar Aam’s tranquil, soaring textures and Magnus Lindberg’s tour de force, Jeux d'anches, which will reverberate dramatically around Wapping’s cavernous space.

Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival, the UK’s most innovative festival of contemporary music, hits 30 this year with a ten day festival including a host of the leading names in contemporary music, vegetal violins, musical code-cracking and singing cash machines.
