Eivind Gullberg Jensen will conduct the pianist Nelson Goerner with the London Philharmonic Orchestra at London’s Royal Festival Hall on 30 May.

20/05/2008 :: Gullberg Jensen made his conducting breakthrough with a stunning performance in 2005 when he stepped in at short notice to replace Vladimir Jurowski with the Orchestre National de France. The French magazine Le Monde de la Musique subsequently listed him as number five of ten young conductors to watch in the 21st century. In addition to repeat visits to the Orchestre National de France, many other prestigious invitations have followed, including the Leipzig Gewandhaus, Munich Philharmonic, Rundfunk Sinfonieorchester Berlin, BBC Symphony Orchestra and Salzburg Mozarteum, and he will make his debut with the English National Opera in 2009. He has recently been appointed Chief Conductor of the NDR Radiophilharmonie in Hanover from the 2009/10 season, following his thrilling debut with the Orchestra just three months ago.

The concert opens with Brahms’ Piano Concerto No. 2, performed by Argentinean pianist Nelson Goerner. Magnificent, rolling themes and rippling harmonic patterns form the focal point of a rich and wonderful dialogue with the orchestra, employing particularly colourful interplay between the soloist, cello and winds.

Sibelius’ 2nd Symphony on the other hand, is a lungful of pure air, a breathtaking view from a mountain top, the warmth of a roaring fire, the style of a Scandinavian metropolis. This is a work that seems almost alive with spontaneity and passion whilst making perfect musical and geographical sense: a snow-capped panorama of an achievement.
