Renowned musicians Paal Nilssen-Love and Ingebrigt Håker Flaten are taking part in this year's Cheltenham Jazz Festival which runs from 27 April to 1 May.

Paal Nilssen-Love (drums) and Ingebrigt Flaten (bass) are two musicians at the forefront of new wave Scandinavian jazz.  Extrovert, free-thinking and fresh, the duo have worked together since 1993, when, as students in Trondhiem, they helped form the cult Norwegian group, Element. More recently, they have become the core of critically-acclaimed group, Atomic, a high-energy, groove-based band signed to the adventurous Jazzland label.

Their 2006 collaboration with British saxophonist Evan Parker marks the second appearance of the duo at Cheltenham, following their mind-blowing collaborations with our resident artist, Ken Vandermark, in 2005.

Born and raised in a jazz club in Stavanger, Norway, Paal Nilssen-Love has been a major player on the Norwegian jazz scene since 1990 and is one of the foremost drummers in Europe. He is currently an active member of several bands, a philosophy deliberately employed to ensure a mix of musical styles and versatility in his playing.

Cutting his teeth at the acclaimed Trondheim Music Academy, Ingebrigt Flaten is now one of Europe’s most in-demand bassists. Having spent seven years touring with the seminal band of Bugge Wesseltoft, he now gigs at festivals and clubs across Europe and the US, with a number of cutting-edge bands.

The first Cheltenham Jazz Festival took place in 1996, under the direction of Jim Smith, proving to be popular with established jazz fans, critics and music lovers from Cheltenham and beyond. With a varied and adventurous programme, the Festival has successfully made its mark in the UK's music calendar, challenging the stylistic boundaries set by other festivals and developing new audiences in jazz.

Highlights of the 2006 programme include the Grammy award-winning singer, Dianne Reeves, Miles Davis collaborator, Lee Konitz, the World Saxophone Quartet’s Jimi Hendrix Experience, and British jazz diva Claire Martin, alongside the Laurence Cottle Big Band.
