About the Edvard Grieg Anniversary 2007

2007 marks the centenary of the death of the composer Edvard Grieg, who died on 4 September 1907.

Edvard Grieg was an artist whose music, words and ideas are still relevant today. He remains one of Norway’s most important ambassadors, and continues to open doors both in Norway and abroad.

An important aim of the Grieg anniversary is to generate renewed interest in the composer’s work. Various exhibitions, concerts and seminars will be held in Norway and elsewhere to present Grieg’s works and ideas to both old and new audiences.

The Grieg anniversary will not, however, just be a retrospective on Edvard Grieg’s life and work. Testing his music and ideas against contemporary aesthetics and social views is at least equally important. A number of young musicians and artists will take part in the commemoration programme, presenting both traditional Grieg performances and original works inspired by the composer’s ideas and actions.

The anniversary has three themes, which separately and together are intended to highlight the relevance of and revitalise Grieg’s heritage. These are:

  • Grieg the humanist;
  • Grieg the composer;  and
  • A sampler of Grieg’s works.

Grieg 07, a company founded by the City of Bergen in May 2006, will initiate, coordinate and carry out the celebrations and events taking place during the Grieg  anniversary. Its board of nine is chaired by Herman Friele, Bergen’s mayor. Director Ragna Sofie Grung Moe and Project Coordinator Are Frode Søholt constitute the administrative team.

The Grieg anniversary has a budget of NOK 12 million, and is primarily funded by the Norwegian Government, the City of Bergen, and Hordaland County Authority. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs is supporting and working with Grieg 07 on the international aspects of the celebrations.
