Design duo Rubecksen Yamanaka’s latest collection ‘Knitted Wilderness’ takes its inspiration from animal features, old-fashioned lingerie and an avid, naturalist artist.

01/02/2006 :: Rubecksen Yamanaka was established in 2002 by Norwegian womenswear designer Hilde Rubecksen and Japanese knitwear designer Tomoko Yamanaka after the pair graduated from The Royal College of Art.

Fashion Fringe finalists in 2004 and two consecutive successful London Fashion Week shows at the Royal Academy in February and September of 2005 resulted in stockists including Browns in London and Side by Side and Isetan in Tokyo and support from the international fashion press in Japan, Scandinavia and the UK with a piece in the current issue of UK Vogue.

Rubecksen Yamanaka’s Autumn/Winter 2006/07 collection is inspired by animal features, elements of traditional menswear and Amish simplicity, old fashioned lingerie and last but not least avid naturalist and installation artist Mark Dion whose work raises questions about the visual representation of nature.

A cotton tulle shirt dress inspired by traditional men’s shirts and Amish style dresses in wool and velvet sits alongside velvet tailored suits, knitted jackets and coats - knitwear embracing animal like elements in shape and texture. Quirky accessories include wool stockings, girdles and garters.

Rubecksen Yamanaka rapidly developed their style using only top quality fabrics and yarns. The AW06/07 collection ‘Knitted Wilderness’ uses yarns of fine cashmere, soft lambs wool, mohair and Shetlands wool and fabrics including cotton stretch velvet, silk velvet, soft felted wool, cotton tulle and fine cotton jersey. The colour palette encompassing cream, dusty pink, beige, silver, charcoal, chocolate and black.

Rubecksen Yamanaka are showing during London Fashion Week at The Royal Academy as part of on|off on Wednesday 15 February.
