03/11/2004 :: Nils Petter Molvaer: Streamer
Sula ****
More moddy electronic soundscapes from the Oslo trumpeter and his crew; moody in that each track has a distinct feel, rather than in the sense of grumpy. Molvaer, in fact, has little to be grumpy about: he’s partially credited with Scandinavia’s thriving nu-jazz wave and he can sound clubby, with d’n’b beats and weird, swirling technologically induced sounds, without sacrificing the jazzman integrity of his piercing trumpet or Eivind Aarset’s echoing guitar. His MO doesn’t change much from one album to the next but, if it ain’t broke, why fix it?
