03/11/2004 :: Mozart Piano Concertos Nos 9 & 18
Leif Ove Andsnes (piano), Norwegian Chamber Orchestra (EMI 557 8032)
Written in January 1777, as he was turning 21, Mozart's ninth concerto (the 'Jeunehomme') is generally regarded as his first mature work for piano and orchestra. Already you can hear the boy wonder reaching for the operatic stage, its belcanto lines beautifully realised by one of the most exciting pianists of the moment, Leif Ove Andsnes, leading the Norwegian Chamber Orchestra. Andsnes says it took him a while to appreciate Mozart's keyboard works, which he now considers 'the greatest treasure'. He is not alone. The pickiest Mozartians will appreciate his energy and lyricism in this and No. 18, K.456, written seven years later.
