CD: Henning Kraggerud: Sibelius, Sinding Violin Concerto, Violin Concerto No 1

03/11/2004 :: SIBELIUS, SINDING ***
Violin Concerto; Violin Concerto No 1
Henning Kraggerud (violin), Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra, cond Bjarte Engeset
Naxos 8.557266

I recently heard this young Norwegian violinist in Leif Ove Andsnes’s festival in Risor and was impressed not only with the colours of his sound, but with his risk-taking and empathy with his chamber-music colleagues. He brings that same liveliness to larger-scale music, as this vivid reading of Sebelius’s Violin Concerto proves, while he makes the best possible case for the rarer concerto by his compatriot Christian Sinding, whose model is clearly Brahms. Two shorter concertante pieces by each composer, Sibelius’s beautiful Serenade in G minor and Sinding’s D major Romance, are welcome bonuses. Good work from the Bournemouth SO, and a fine recording.
