Norwegian artist Gro Thorsen, whose miniature paintings have been a hit across the world, will hold her second solo exhibition in the UK at the Jill George Gallery in Soho, London.

Thorsen has previously held solo exhibitions in Norway, and now returns to the gallery where she held her first UK exhibition. She has also been part of numerous group exhibitions whose work has been displayed in galleries in New York, London, Tel Aviv and Miami.

The exhibition consists of various new works, including a large composite painting entitled ‘Seasons’, and a series of images of Scottish tennis star Andy Murray. The pictures of Murray were made during the prestigious Wimbledon tournament, and marks the first time Thorsen has chosen to a particular person as the focal point for one of her composite paintings. The artwork is described as ‘a remarkable synthesis of colour and athletic movement’, where Thorsen ‘extends the boundaries of her chosen format to produce a dynamic and compelling homage to a British summer ritual’, and marks a new development for the artist.

‘Seasons’ consists of 366 minutely detailed paintings and continues Thorsen’s unique approach to exploring urban landscape. She has chosen to focus fragments of human figures and then builds a complex survey of the larger environment. Thorsen explains her fascination with people and everyday life by stating that she is “interested in painting people one confronts on the street every day and to give these anonymous figures a sense of identity and purpose. I want to reflect their urban lives – always in movement, ever changing.”

She was born in Bergen and obtainedd a BA in Fine Art from Wimbledon School of Art in 1999. Thorsen has also studied at Bergen art School and was shortlisted for the Celeste Art Prize in 2006. She has also been part of numerous group exhibitions whose work has been displayed in galleries in New York, London, Tel Aviv and Miami.
