Roddy Bell and Kurt Johannessen at RBS Gallery

 Date:03/06/2004 - 16/07/2004

In celebration of its 1st anniversary of being a fully international organisation, the Royal British Society of Sculptors is excited to present ’Slight Credulities’ by Norwegian based artists Roddy Bell and Kurt Johannessen, in the first of an annual series of RBS awarded exhibitions of sculptors in conversation. 3 May - 16 July

Slight Credulities at RBS Gallery
Kurt will transform the entire space of the studio gallery, filtering the natural light of the space with eyelid red. A voice will describe in great detail the sensation of closing one¹s eyes and opening them again; a universal human reaction that is taken for granted and forgotten as a daily function, yet when isolated and examined in this way becomes an absorbing event. Pairs of glasses will be handed to visitors with which to view the installation. Kurt will also be producing an edition of 400 artist's books as part of the show.

Roddy's 9 year old son will practice his piano in a projected film in the Salon; his back to the room yet perfectly at ease within the space's domestic interior. Intermittently, he will pause, turn and gesture towards the simply made boat-like objects on the floor of the gallery and their sails then begin to move hesitantly - under the breeze from tiny fans - towards a flickering flame in the fireplace.

Friends and colleagues

Friends and colleagues for over 20 years, having shown widely throughout Europe, this will be the first time Roddy and Kurt have exhibited together in the UK.

Kurt Johannessen has established a reputation as one of Norway's leading performance artists, and has performed / shown at the V&A, the South London Gallery and the Museum of Modern Art, Oxford.

Roddy Bell has shown in group exhibitions curated by Lars Nitve, Dorthe Abelgaard (Danish curator for S. Paulo & Venice Biennale) and Grethe Gratvold (Danish curator for NIFKA & Braandts Klædefabrikk) and three years ago was one of five candidates shortlisted for the Henry Moore Fellowship at Newcastle University.
