Art Happens – a series of events run by The Art Fund exploring contemporary art and related themes – presents an exciting and unique sneak preview to Christie’s newest concept sale, Nordic Art & Design. The event will include a talk by Christie’s Nordic Art specialist Sophie Hawkins, offering an inside view on work by leading artists and designers from the region.

07/09/2006 :: The Nordic Art and Design sale, which takes place on 31 October, is the first of its kind done by an international auction house outside the Nordic countries, and will feature important pieces from 19th and 20th century post-war and cutting-edge contemporary art and prints, iconic items from leading designers, and spectacular pieces from private collections, including works by artists such as Johan Christian Dahl (Norway); Vilhelm Hammershøi (Denmark); Helene Schjerfbeck (Finland); Carl Larsson (Sweden); Ellen Thesleff (Finland); Ola Billgren (Sweden); Johannes S Kjarval (Iceland); and Olafur Eliasson (Iceland). Also included will be iconic items from leading 19th and 20th Century designers such as Edvin Ohrström (Sweden); Alvar Aalto (Finland); Arne Jacobsen (Denmark); as well as jewelry and silver by David Andersen (Norway) and Georg Jensen (Denmark).

The preview and talk on 29 October, two days before the sale, is a joint effor between Christie's and The Art Fund, the UK’s leading independent art charity. It offers grants to help UK museums and galleries enrich their collections and campaigns widely on behalf of museums and their visitors. It has 80,000 members and since its foundation in 1903, The Art Fund has helped UK public collections acquire over 850,000 works of art, ranging from Bronze Age treasures to contemporary works of art. In 2005 The Art Fund offered over £4.1 million to museums and galleries and distributed 12 gifts and bequests.
