Norwegian-British seminar on sustainable fisheries

A seminar on sustainable fisheries was opened on 19 October in London by Helga Pedersen, Norwegian Minister of Fisheries and Coastal Affairs, and Ben Bradshaw, Parliamentary Secretary at the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, DEFRA.

Environmental concerns and consumer responsibilities have led to increased public interest in fisheries and resource management. Consequently, this seminar addressed what measures Norway is taking to preserve fish stocks and what the country is doing to prevent illegal fishing. It also identified how quotas are being decided and how the control is executed. The overall goal of the seminar was to answer these questions and to look at how Norwegian authorities work to maintain sustainable fisheries.

At the seminar, Helga Pedersen, Norwegian Minister of Fisheries and Coastal Affairs, highlighted in her speech the importance of sustainable management of living marine resources. "This is of course a topic which concerns me," she said, "but I am especially happy to see that there is a growing interest in these matters from society at large."
