Modern 'Hedda Gabler' at Barbican

One of Germany’s leading directors, Thomas Ostermeier, brings his production of Henrik Ibsens ‘Hedda Gabler’ to the Barbican Theatre in London. The play will run from 27 February until 1 March.

This audacious production brings Ibsen’s drama into a contemporary German city. As rain pours down outside a sleek, modern apartment, the tense relationship between newlyweds Hedda and Tesman periodically erupts in bursts of violence that shatter the calm. Hedda’s frustration and isolation manifests itself in a calculated and chilling manipulation of those around her, with ultimately destructive consequences.

When first written, 'Hedda Gabler' was universally condemned because it irreverently exposed 19th century bourgeois morality. Today it is one of Ibsen’s most popular of plays. In 'Hedda Gabler' he offers his most complex and indomitable of female creations: an intelligent and ambitious woman who has inadvertently constructed her own stifling prison through complicity with bourgeois society and acceptance of a marriage of convenience. Longing for life but yet fearful of scandal, Hedda represses her deepest needs and desires and fails to discover herself or to embrace the full wonderment of human experience.

The play is in German with English surtitles.
