Playing in Bristol Old Vic's Main House from 26 January, this new version of Ibsen’s ‘Ghosts’ is translated by celebrated Irish playwright Frank McGuinness. McGuiness, author of 'Observe the Sons of Ulster Marching to the Somme', has previously translated many of Ibsen's plays including 'Hedda Gabler', 'Peer Gynt' and 'A Doll's House'. His version of ‘Ghosts’ promises to be gritty, fresh and shocking.
When ‘Ghosts’ exploded onto the stage it caused outrage and was immediately banned. Yet it was so theatrically exciting that it established Ibsen as the trailblazer of modern drama. ‘Ghosts’ captures the burning social and moral issues of the day, the flames of which are still raging in our own times.
‘Ghosts’ is directed by Bristol Old Vic's new artistic associate Robert Bowman, whose production of ‘The Seagull’ delighted audiences in autumn 2005. Mrs Alwing is played by leading screen and classical actress Sian Thomas who recently played Lady Macbeth at the RSC. Pastor Manders will be played by Simon Shepherd, recently seen in Bristol Old Vic's production of Chekhov's ‘The Seagull’.
