Norwegian freaks to Northern England

The Norwegian dance company Frikar Dance, who will accompany Norway’s Eurovision entrant on stage in Moscow later this spring, is heading to Witham Hall in Barnard Castle on Saturday 4 April for a one-off performance.

They will perform as part of a Scandinavian double bill, along with Denmark’s Harald Haugaard Trio, at the Barnard Castle. The dance company was established in 2005 and has since performed on a wide variety of stages and venues, including various theatres and extreme sports festivals. Frikar Dance was founded by Norwegian dancer and choreographer Hallgrim Hansegård, and he has worked closely with composer Andreas Ljones on several productions. The company consists of Halling-dancers - a Norwegian folk dance - breakdancers, capoeiristas and contemporary dancers, and their motto is ‘refined roughness’. Frikar Dance aspire to ‘experimentally link new technology and human movement, developing a panorama of sound and dance’, something which makes their performances a spectacular experience.

They have appeared on the Norwegian versions of ‘So You Think You Can Dance’ and ‘Britain’s Got Talent’, something which has made them popular with a wider audience. Frikar Dance has recently collaborated with Norwegian musician Alexander Rybak, and together they won the Norwegian finals of the Eurovision Song Contest. They will therefore be performing with Rybak at the European finals in Moscow on 16 May.

Frikar is the old Nordic equivalent to the English word ’freaker’, meaning ‘person who is free from rules, unconventional and hard to battle’. Frikar was also a title that was given to dancers who managed to dance the others off the dance floor.
