Norwegian folk music to Scotland!

Anders Aasberg and the Frikar dance companyAnders Aasberg and the Frikar dance company

A festival with music, song and dance from Scandinavia and Scotland will include performances and workshops from Norwegian dancer Anders Aasberg and Scottish/Norwegian folk group Boreas.

Norwegian dancer Anders Aasberg is part of the Frikar dance company that won the Eurovision Choreography Prize 2009, and features in the first ‘Hoots Man Alive!’ Traditional Male Dance Festival, which is part of the Northern Streams Festival held in Edinburgh in April. Aasberg will demonstrate the acrobatic male Halling dance, a typical Norwegian folk dance. Frikar performs with breakdancers, capoeira and contemporary dancers in their crew of 23 dancers and six musicians and three technicians.

The dance group Boreas which includes members from Scotland and Norway will also perform at the Northern Streams. Boreas, named after the North wind, combines Scots song and fiddle traditions with West Norwegian dance music and song melodies in contemporary arrangements.

Both Anders Aasberg and Boreas will participate in the Norwegian Tune workshop on Saturday 17 April during the day and they will both be performing again on Sunday evening. Aasberg and Boreas will also perform at the Northern Streams Glasgow Concert in Lauries Bar on 20 April at 7.30pm.

Northern Streams brings together music, song and dance from Scotland and the Scandinavian countries and will run from 16-18 April. The Norwegian contributors will perform on the 17th. Other performers include Swedish group Svanevit and The Dancing Danes.
