Fancy a fiddle?

SYM has already organised workshops in the UK earlier this year.

The trio SYM plays an engaging mix of original and traditional music from Northern Europe and Scandinavia, and will perform concerts in the UK this autumn.

SYM consists of Clare Salaman, Eleonore Billy and the Norwegian Hardanger violin player Anne Hytta. Since SYM was formed in 2007, the trio has been receiving acclaim for their performances and more recently for their debut CD, Symbiosis, which was released in April 2008. The music is played on instruments with sympathetic (resonating) strings, the Hardanger violin, the Swedish nyckelharpa (keyed fiddle) and the hurdy-gurdy.

Anne Hytta is among the foremost performers of the Hardanger violin, a special fiddle with sympathetic strings and its own repertoire of Norwegian traditional tunes. Hytta was awarded the Norwegian Folk Music Award for Best Solo Album in 2006, and is currently studying composition part-time at the Academy of Music in Oslo. She also travels around the world teaching the hardanger violin, as she will also do in the UK this autumn.
