Renowned Norwegian trumpet soloist Ole Edvard Antonsen will perform at the Barbican with the London Symphony Orchestra on 1 November.

Ole Edvard Antonsen is regarded as one of the most outstanding trumpet soloists world-wide. After winning the First Prizes of the CIEM-competition in Geneva in 1987 and the UNESCO Competition in Bratislava in 1989 he left his position at the Oslo Philharmonic and started his career as a full time performing and recording soloist.

Antonsen has performed as soloist under the direction of the world’s leading conductors and with the most renowned orchestras and chamber orchestras across the globe. He has taken a keen interest in contemporary music and has premiered more than 40 works written especially for him.

At the London concert, works by Norwegian composer Edvard Grieg along with compositions by James MacMillan and Sibelius will be performed. Grieg’s Lyric Suite is drawn from enchanting pieces originally written for solo piano. Lemminkäinen is one of the heroes of the great Finnish epic, the Kalevala. Sibelius’s planned opera about the warrior became the basis for a stirring suite in 1896.The mystery of transubstantiation inspires James MacMillan’s 1993 concerto: ‘epiclesis’ is an invocation calling upon God’s name, especially during the eucharist, and each of the main themes infuses and transforms the other.
