Bamse joins Blue Peter Book Club!
The biography that charts the life of Norwegian-born Sea Dog Bamse, an unusual World War II hero, has now made it into the Blue Peter Book Club.
In wartime people need a hero, someone who gives them hope. One of war’s most remarkable heroes was Bamse, a 14 stone St Bernard dog who became a symbol of freedom and an inspiration for Allied troops throughout Europe. Bamse’s extraordinary life story is told in this biography by the people who knew and loved him. The book is now included in Blue Peter’s Book Club.
Bamse was born in Norway but based in Scotland and became a much-loved fixture following the German occupation of Norway. When he died in 1944 he was buried with full naval honours, hundreds attending his funeral, and a statue of him was later unveiled in Montrose. He was posthumously awarded the PDSA Gold Medal - the 'animals' George Cross - for his bravery in saving lives and devotion to duty as a registered crew member of the mine-sweeper Thorodd.
