The Norwegian artist Martin Skauen, whose work is influenced by comic books and violent movies, will be exhibiting at London's Laura Bartlett Gallery from 31st of January.
Skauen is currently living in Berlin and was a resident artist at the Kunstlerhaus Bethanien in 2007-2008. He graduated from the National Academy of Fine Art in Oslo in 2002. Skauen has previously held solo exhibitions at the Laura Bartlett Gallery and Dirty Work in Malmø. He has also been a part of several group exhibtions in Germany, USA, Greece, Poland, Italy and Australia. Skauen won the first prize at the Diesel New Art Awards and has also contributed to both Truce Magazine and Odd Magazine.
In addition to drawing, Skauen also films his pictures and composes music to accompany the projection. Although they are easily recognisable, his figures evoke a diverse and multifaceted system of references. ‘I am influence by popular culture, especially violent movies and comic books, but also by well renowned works of art depicting death and destruction’, Skauen explains.
