As this year’s Oddveig Røsegg lecture, professor Michael Tucker will present an illustrated talk entitled: ‘Music in the Landscape: Jan Garbarek & Frans Widerberg’ at the University of Strathclyde.
Oddveig Røsegg, in whose memory this annual lecture is held, was lecturer in Norwegian Language and Culture for 21 years at the University of Glasgow. For over thirty years she was a driving force in the Scottish Norwegian Society and a popular member of the Scottish Society for Northern Studies. Her contribution to the spread of Norwegian culture in Scotland was recognised by the award of the Medal of St Olav in 1969.
Professor Michael Tucker, from the Centre for Research and Development at the University of Brighton, has been curator for the only major exhibition of Frans Widerberg’s art in Britain; he has lectured widely in Britain and Europe on 20th century Norwegian music and art.
Like Scotland’s Tommy Smith, the renowned Norwegian jazz musician, Jan Garbarek, has sought inspiration in other art-forms, notably poetry and painting. The art of Frans Widerberg, whom many see as the heir of Edvard Munch, proved a particularly effective stimulus.
