Nico Widerberg exhibition moves on to Newcastle

After they inaugurated the Kings Place Gallery in London last year, sculptures by one of Norway's most distinguished artists, Nico Widerberg, will now be on display in Newcastle.

The exhibition 'Nico Widerberg: Sculpture' at Northumbira University Gallery, in association with Kings Place Gallery, will showcase some of the artist's large and small scale sculptures in granite and glass.

Extravagantly gifted, Widerberg has exhibited throughout Europe, Scandinavia in particular, as well as the US and comes from one of Norway’s most distinguished artistic families. His father Frans, for instance, has long been acknowledged as the foremost figurative painter since Edvard Munch.

Predominantly still and monolithic, Widerberg's sculpture unites traditions as diverse as pre-classical Greek and the elongated presences of Giacometti. Although he claims that he is not influenced by the art of antiquity, he nonetheless values its sense of timelessness and spirituality. Defiantly independent, Nico Widerberg is also relentlessly inventive.
