Norwegian and Peruvian photographers with joint exhibition

The works of Norwegian Jørn Tomter and Peruvian Taryn Takahashi are brought together under one roof at the exhibition 'Double Take' at the Terrace Studios in East London.

Jørn Tomter focuses on sociological and geographical living-patterns in the tiny Russian coal-mining community of Barentsburg. Situated on the Norwegian-controlled archipelago of Svalbard, the Russian miners live closer to the North Pole than to mainland Europe. ‘Barentsburg’ is part of Tomter’s on-going Arctic Circle project and is represented at Terrace by a series of colour photographs. Tomter lives and works in London and Oslo.

Taryn Takahashi invites her audience to respond to the multiple possibilities of the photograph as a means of producing intuitive, malleable images that raise questions about truthfulness and the value of the medium. Concentrating on small set-ups, these large-scale photographs leave us with an uncertain sense of accuracy and recognition of the subject matter emphasizing the possibility of the familiar.
