A group of artists went to a small hut on the remote island of Hjertøya in Norway for a research trip. The result is an exhibition based on the investigation into the life of artist Kurt Schwitters.

In 2007, American Kenneth Goldsmith, Swedes Carl Michael von Hausswolff and Karl Holmqvist, German Jutta Koether, and Norwegian Eline McGeorge travelled to the Schwitters Hütte in the Norwegian county Møre og Romsdal. This is where Kurt Schwitters (1887 – 1948) lived during his exile from Germany in the 1930s. The project delves into local history as well as the geopolitical conditions Schwitters had to navigate during these years. The exhibition ’27 Senses’ speaks of the abandonment of a place. In focus here is the idea of stopping and starting, the notion that Schwitters was forced to rebuild his life several times due to the political situation that led to his exile from Germany to Norway and subsequently to the UK in 1940.

The five artists who participated in the initial 2009 ‘27 Senses’ exhibition at the art museum KUBE in Ålesund, Norway, will recontextualise works created in response to the visit to Hjertøya island, when they exhibit in London this summer.

The exhibition is curated by Lina Dzuverovic and Electra, a contemporary art agency specialising in curating and producing ambitious projects by artists working across sound, moving image, performance and the visual arts.

Chisenhale Gallery is one of London’s most innovative galleries for contemporary visual art, promoting national and international developments in visual culture through its commissioning of solo exhibitions as well as a newly established programme of public events, including performances, film screenings and talks.
