Animals Beyond the Call of Duty

"Animals Beyond the Call of Duty" Exhibition at Edinburgh Zoo, 17 to 31 August at Edinburgh Zoo Education Centre.

This exhibition celebrates the 40th anniversary of the adoption of king penguin Colonel-in Chief Sir Nils Olav, by H.M. the King of Norway's Guard. Since 1972, the penguin has been steadily rising up through the ranks. The exhibition will explain why a penguin was knighted and further explore Scottish-Norwegian wartime links.

Visitors will also learn the stories of the other animals, among others Sea Dog Bamse and Winkie the Pigeon. The former is the heroic St. Bernard mascot of Free Norwegian Forces in the Second World War, who were based at Montrose and Dundee. The latter saved the crew of a Beaufort torpedo bomber, which crashed in the North Sea following an anti-shipping mission off the Norwegian coast in 1942.
