World War II and its Scandinavian legacy
A conference where historians will look at how the Second World War affected the Nordic countries in very different ways will take place in Edinburgh on 8-10 April.
The four Nordic countries of Denmark, Norway, Sweden and Finland experienced the effects of the German invasion in April 1940 in very different ways. Collaboration, resistance, concessions, and co-belligerency were only some of the short term consequences. Each country’s historiography of the period has undergone enormous changes in the 70 years since the invasion to an extent which is little appreciated and understood outside the countries involved.
It is believed that it will be instructive to review the immediate and long-term influences on each country’s self-image and national identity as viewed today. This is the main purpose of the conference in Edinburgh. The conference has been structured to enable historians from each country and Nordic scholars to review the last 70 years and to share issues of interpretation and commemoration with each other and their European counterparts.
