Norway for young people
Norwegian Government Scholarships

Norwegian belongs to the northern group of Germanic languages. It is very close to Swedish and Danish and is also related to English, Dutch and German.

The Viking influence that gave Britain a new social and legal system and new cities like York (Jórvík) and Derby (Djorabýr), is still preserved in the English language – in everyday words like egg and leg, take and trust, and even they and them. A millennium or so later, there is greater need for translation, and you might like to find out about just how do I say it in Norwegian?

There are several ways of learning Norwegian in the UK, ranging from institutional language courses, books intended for teacher-based learning via courses for self-study, many of them accompanied by a set of audio-cassettes, to cartoon-strip learning, Linguaphone and interactive CD-ROM.

A selection of books is available from the Anglo Norse Society, c/o Royal Norwegian Embassy, 25 Belgrave Square, London SW1X 8QD, (020 7235 9529). A wider range is kept by Grant & Cutler, the international bookshop at 55 Gt. Marlborough St., London W1V 2AY (020) 7734 2012).

Education at Primary and Lower Secondary levels:

The Norwegian School in London provides primary and lower secondary education for children aged 6 to 16. It follows the Norwegian national curriculum, leading to the Certificate of Lower Secondary Education, the Norwegian equivalent to GCSE. It also runs a kindergarten for children aged from three to five years old. Further information from the School Office at 28 Arterbery Road, Wimbledon, London SW20 8AH (020) 8947 6617).

Norwegian courses for children aged 6-16 are held every second Saturday morning from September to June at the Norwegian Church in London. A basic course for parents is available at the same time. Details from the Norwegian Church, St. Olav's Square, 1 Albion Street, London SE16 1JB (020) 7740 3900.
