As of 1 March 2010 it will no longer be possible to apply for a passport at Norwegian consulates abroad. From that date all Norwegian passport applicants must apply in person at the Embassy in London or at another Embassy abroad. Alternatively, they may apply while in Norway even though they reside abroad.
As of 7 April 2010 the Norwegian Embassy will begin the process of collecting biometric information such as photo, fingerprints and signature of all passport applicants. The reason for these changes is the Schengen requirement to introduce biometric information into passports.
As of 15 February 2010 applications for a personal number can no longer be handed in together with passport applications. Norwegian nationals must have their personal number registered in Norway before applying for a passport. Applications for a personal number can, as before, be handed in at the consulates. The consulates will still be assisting the Embassy in handing out the new passports.
The Embassy expects the number of passport applicants to increase considerably. To avoid long queues the Embassy has decided to introduce a new passport booking system. All applicants must book passport appointments well in advance with the Embassy.
As of 1 December 2009 the Consular Section will have new opening hours as follows:
