The King's Guard of Norway to London

On two successive evenings each year in June a magnificent pageant of military music, precision drill and colour takes place on Horse Guards Parade in the heart of London when either the Massed Bands of the Household Division or The Massed Bands of the Royal Marines carry out the Ceremony of Beating Retreat. This year, HM The King’s Guard’s of Norway will also take part.

His Majesty The King's Guard has two main roles; it serves as the Norwegian King's lifeguards, guarding the royal residences (the Royal Palace and Skaugum) and Akershus Fortress in Oslo, and is also the main infantry unit responsible for the defence of Oslo. The battalion was founded in 1856 and served with distinction during the Second World War,  where it prevented the Wehrmacht from capturing the Royal Family and the Cabinet at the battle of Midtskogen Gård between the 9. - 10. April 1940, earning the Guards its first battle honour.

The Beating Retreat is an unforgettable evening as 300 musicians, drummers and pipers perform this age-old ceremony. The Retreat has origins in the early days of chivalry when beating or sounding retreat pulled a halt to the days fighting, a return to camp and the mounting of the guard for the night. Today, Beating Retreat has become a major event in the Army’s ceremonial calendar, delivering an evening of spirited marches as well as poignant and evocative hymns and anthems of special significances to our fighting forces everywhere.

The event starts at 7pm each evening with the salute being taken by Her Majesty The Queen or another member of The Royal Family. The participants of Household Division Beating Retreat are drawn from the bands of the two Household Cavalry Regiments and the five Foot Guards Regiments which make up the Household Division.

The ceremony of Beating Retreat by the Massed Bands of the Household Division will be carried out on Horse Guards Parade, London on the evenings of 3rd and 4th June 2009 at 9pm.
